Oh Lord, the Lord of the Universe, whose form is that of a vigorous cowherd boy with three eyes and four arms, who carries on his shoulders the Halayudha or conch-shell flag staff to summon people or drive away evil spirits. He is known as Jagannath to men and Balarama to women because he appeared in this world as an infant together with his elder brother Balarama. The Lord of the Universe was born to Chandi (Goddess of Fortune), who had been abandoned by her husband, who came to be known as Shiva. Shiva then made love with Parvati (Goddess of Love) and took her hand in marriage. Parvati's father Daksha, however, did not accept him and believed that he was an imposter. He performed a grand yagna (sacrifice), which was attended by all the Gods. Daksha performed the ritualistic fire-sacrifice intended to create a male child, whom he intended to call "Shiva", but Parvati's fire did not burn. Instead, the fire produced a female child, whom she named "Parvati". Daksha honoured this child as Goddess of Love and Fortune and invited all the Gods and Goddesses to attend her naming ceremony. Of course, Shiva was not invited, but arrived uninvited nevertheless. After having his share of the fire sacrifice, he went back to his abode on Mount Kailash. In anger at being excluded from the yagna's proceedings, he cursed Daksha that he would be reduced to ashes by his daughter's wedding ceremony. Unfortunately for Daksha'...
